To celebrate 5 years of elite motocross heritage, Honda unveiled the latest version of its flagship motocross bike, the CRF2023R 450R, at a media event. The event takes place ahead of the opening of the 2023 AMA Pro Motocross at Fox Raceway and features the entire Honda HRC roster – Ken Roczen, Chase Sexton, Hunter Lawrence and Jett Lawrence – as well as former Honda legends including champions Gary Jones, Johnny O. Mara, Rick Johnson and Trey Canard, and former team manager Dave Arnold.
Introduced 50 years after the debut of the 1973 Elsinore CR250M (Honda’s original motocross machine), the 2023 CRF450R received key engine upgrades and chassis modifications designed to improve corner exit acceleration and improved handling. A 50th Anniversary Edition is also available, celebrating Honda’s motocross heritage, with a special paint job reminiscent of the iconic CR models that dominated AMA Supercross and Motocross in the 1980s.
Honda’s motocross success began with the aforementioned 1973 Elsinore CR250M, which saw Jones race in Honda’s first AMA motocross championship. In the half century since then, a long line of champions have won more titles, including Marty Smith, Chuck Sun, Johnny O’Mara, Ron Lekian, David Bailey, Darrell Schultz, Mitch Diamond, Rick Johnson, Jeff Stanton, Jean-Michel . Bale, Mike Kedrowski, Doug Henry, Steve Lamson, Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmichael and finally team HRC incumbents Ryder Jett Lawrence won the 2021 AMA Pro Motocross 250 Championship and the 2022 AMA Supercross 250SX West Regional Championship. These renowned riders were instrumental in the development and innovation of the CR and CRF motocross bikes, cementing Honda’s legendary status in the sport. Originally introduced in 2002, the CRF450R continues Honda’s tradition of racing innovation using feedback from Honda HRC racers.

Technological updates to the CRF450R include a narrower intake port shape and longer intake funnel, revised cam profiles and a smaller throttle body diameter for smooth power delivery and increased torque for improved cornering acceleration. Frame stiffness has been optimized by thickening the material at strategic points, while the use of steel engine mounts (instead of aluminum) helps improve front-end traction. A reinforced shock spring and redesigned fork complete the stiffness-optimized frame without harshness. For strength and noise reduction, the muffler body is made of heat treated aluminum and features a new inner tube design.
For 2023, Honda is also offering a 50th Anniversary Edition model in a livery reminiscent of the legendary 80s CR that dominated AMA motocross and Supercross. Fans of the era will easily recognize this version with its blue seat upholstery, white license plate, gold rims, gold steering wheel, gray metal triple clamps and special graphics.
Based on the legendary CRF450R platform, the CRF450RWE (“Works Edition”) is designed for riders looking for the ultimate edge. Specifically designed to reduce lap times and provide an unrivaled driving experience, it features an extensive list of premium upgrades inspired by Roczen and Sexton Team Honda HRC machines, including stainless steel Yoshimura exhaust pipes, hand-polished cylinder ports, Hinson clutch baskets and cover, throttle valve. Jockey seat cover and graphics, DID DirtStar LT-X rims and DM2 gold chain, coated fork tubes, fork legs and 18mm shock shaft, gray metal triple clamps, Renthal Kevlar knobs and custom ignition map. In addition, the CRF450RWE uses the same engine and chassis upgrades as its CRF450R sibling to improve acceleration and handling out of corners.

To improve corner-exit acceleration and handling, the model gets the same chassis and engine upgrades as the motocross-related CRF450R. The championship-proven CRF450RX features off-road specific features such as a dedicated engine control unit (ECU) and suspension settings, an 18-inch rear wheel, aluminum side brackets, a large 2.1-gallon fuel tank, and track or trail grips. why it is the bike of choice for many off-road riders, including the SLR Honda and JCR Honda teams.
Honda’s flagship motocross machine – the CRF450R – continues to push the boundaries of technology to stay ahead, but some customers prioritize value. Honda caters to both groups as the CRF450R-S (based on the 2022 CRF450R run by Honda HRC Team riders Chase Sexton and Ken Roczen) is offered at an attractive price without significant performance sacrifices.
